In 1884 Angel La Madrid Cuesta, a young Spanish immigrant, opened a small cigar factory. He was soon accompanied by Peregrino Rey, and the Cuesta-Rey brand was born. Originally made in Cuba and the official cigar of Spain’s King Alfonso XIII, the Cuesta-Rey cigars are now being skillfully handmade by the famous Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic.

Offering 3 unique blends: the Cuesta-Rey Centenario, Cuesta-Rey Centro Fino and the Cuesta-Rey Cabinet Collection, each one uses only the finest aged Dominican long-fillers for the binders and fillers, and for the wrappers they use either a U.S. Connecticut shade natural wrapper, Connecticut Broadleaf for the maduro cigars, sun grown wrappers (for the Centro Fino), or Cameroon wrappers. We focus our attention to the U.S.A. Connecticut shade natural wrappers for this review. With a well-earned 90 rating from Cigar Aficionado for their Cuesta-Rey Centenario Pyramid #9 cigar, you can rest assured that with each Cuesta-Rey cigar you are smoking an exceptional quality cigar with flawless construction.

Is the Gurkha Evil Cigar “Pure Evil?”

According to its creator, Kaizad Hansotia, it is! You won’t know what possessed you when you delve into a Gurkha Evil. The Evil blend is Gurkha’s latest addition to the already-prestigious lineup of all the other Gurkha lines. It is also their first full-bodied cigar and it definitely takes no prisoners.

Available in a Robusto size (5 x 50), the Toro (6 x 50), Torpedo (6 1/2 x 53T) and the XO (6 x 60) the Gurkha Evil has earned itself between an 86-rating and a 90-rating from Cigar Aficionado and rightfully so, as it is quite a powerhouse of a cigar!  K. Hansotia & Co. skillfully blend the Gurkha Evil with aged Nicaraguan long fillers, Dominican binders and wrap it all up with a leathery, oily, thick Brazilian wrapper. When you light it up you will taste a myriad of flavors ranging from roasted nuts and the lovely toasty character as it wraps up with a pleasant floral finish. A medium-to-full-bodied smoke the Gurkha Evil ranges of flavors always remain balanced and smooth from your first puff to the last inhale. As you smoke your way through the second half of the cigar you might note that the flavors and strength become more intense and fuller highlighting notes of pepper, wood and earthiness.

If you’re a full-bodied cigar lover you will fall in love with the Gurkha Evil, because it will put your palate to the test. Think you can you handle it?
