You might have smoked Oliva cigars, maybe even a Serie V blend, but have you tried an Oliva Serie V Melanio cigar yet? By the time you’re done reading this, you will wish you had one!
Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider have ranked this line in the high 90s the last 3 years in a row and Cigar Snob actually voted the Melanio blend as the “Cigar of the Year” for 2013! Similar to its predecessor, the original Serie V, delve into one of the 5 vitolas offered and taste the difference of its richness and robustness of the Nicaraguan filler and binder (grown in the Jalapa region, which gives off a natural sweetness and focuses less on strength as the original Serie V does), and the Ecuadorian Sumatran wrapper.
The Oliva Serie V Melanio cigars are box-pressed and come in boxes of 10 cigars or as single cigar samplers in the following sizes:
Torpedo (6 ½ x 52)
Figurado (6 ½ x 52)
Churchill (7 x 50)
Robusto (5 x 52)
Petite Corona (4 ½ x 46)
Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Flavor: Full
Wrapper: Ecuador Sumatran
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
While the Melanio blend falls on the full-bodied end of the strength spectrum, it is still flavorful and smooth enough to please even the most discerning cigar smoker. The Oliva Serie V Melanio cigar’s Sumatran wrapper is silky smooth, almost veinless, reddish-brown, box-pressed, adorning a double band… quite pleasing and easy on the eyes.
Complex and quite tasty, you might catch a glimpse of some floral notes, malted nougat and hints of orange peel. As you progress you will notice a pleasant, heavy smoke and the sweet earthiness almost dissipates as a salted nutty flavor makes its appearance. A peppery, chocolate note lingers on the aftertaste. The Melanio comes together beautifully from start to finish giving the smoker a very memorable experience. While somewhat similar to the original Serie V the Jalapa tobaccos make the Melanio blend more complex and slightly more nuanced.
Created as a tribute to Melanio Oliva, who has been in the cigar industry and growing tobacco for the company since 1886, the Oliva Family takes great pride in their success in the cigar industry, and adding the Oliva Serie V Melanio is proof as well as a great way to carry on the heritage and their continued success. While not limited edition, the Oliva Serie V Melanio is limited in production, so if you run across it, pick up a full box, as they will be hard to come by. In our opinion the Oliva Serie V Melanio is well worth the higher price tag (ranging between $7 to $12 per stick) and is definitely the star of the show!
